Summer evenings with the family

I am really enjoying my evenings at home.  We get to eat dinner together and then we take the dogs for a walk.  The past two nights have been great!!!!!

Tonight we stopped at a playground and James had a ball.  The dogs ran around like crazy.  James played for about 20 minutes.  Mike and I just enjoyed being outside together.

We got home and James went into his room to read.  He read for a good hour before he came downstairs to read to us.  His books of choice....Captain Underpants: The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby.  He loves those books.  He was reading and cracking himself up.

Right now I'm so beat as I didn't sleep last night.  Things were racing through my head.  I finally fell asleep about 1:30 and had to get up at 3:45.  It's been a long day.

Tomorrow I get up early and go for a run then head to a coach's meeting and practice.  I should be home by noon though.  Thursday and Friday I'm at Provincials.  Saturday is a wedding and Sunday we are cleaning and relaxing.

It's a busy week, but I love it that way!

Spring Cleaning!

It has been one crazy week.  First off I have been a giant slug.  At the beginning of the week I had a wicked cold.  It really knocked me out.  I slept every chance I got.  I am finally feeling better and Mother Nature decided that our area needed a good shower.  I'm hoping to get up early tomorrow and get at least 5k in.

Today, since it was raining we decided to start Spring Cleaning!  We are planning to do a garage sale in June so we are trying to get things together and ready to go.  We have also been trying to get James involved in all this.  Today we started our big clean!

I helped James with his bedroom.  We started by trying on all our summer clothes.  He was very methodical with how he did it too.  First all the shorts, then the shirts, then all his winter clothes.  LOL.  As we were deciding what fit, what didn't and what he liked, we were pricing things.  He liked that idea.

Next we tackled all his books.  His school is trying to raise money to build a well in Haiti so they are doing a book and bake sale at the end of June.  They are looking for donations.  I told him that the books he didn't want anymore would go to his school and that daddy and I were doing the same thing with our books.  We went through every one of his books and he decided what he wanted to keep which was most of them.  I can't say too much though because I have a ton of books.

Then came the stuffed animals.  This is where I thought I would have the most problems.  I was wrong.  He went through them and got rid of about half of them.  I was really proud of him.

Last came the toy box.  He did really well with that too.  He kept all his Hot Wheels, Nerf, and Playmobil.  He got rid of about half of his toys.

He got to put the price stickers on everything and he didn't have to get rid of anything that he didn't want too.

His room is now clean and organized.

Mike cleaned the bathroom.  He really scrubbed it too.  I think he even used a toothbrush to get into all the little places.  It looks awesome!

After James took a short break he wanted to do more cleaning and asked to help clean the craft room. I had started on it, but it is going to take a bit more work and organization.  I did let him help pick stuff up and put it on the shelves for further organizing.

He then decided to write a book.  He found some paper that I had were there was a place for writing and to draw a picture.  He's been working on it off and on since around 2:30.  It's going to be a cute book.

Tomorrow our cleaning spree continues.  I'm going to finish the craft room and the living room and Mike said he'd do the kitchen.  Monday I will start on the basement and our bedroom.  Next weekend we are cleaning out the garage.

I'm hoping by next Saturday evening the house will be cleaned from top to bottom and we will be organized for our garage sale.  It's been a very productive day.

I'm on a roll!

10.5 miles today on the bike!  It felt great!  I decided to try something a bit different and did some intervals while I was reading.  I warmed up for one mile then sprinted as hard as I could for a half mile.  I did that for 3 rounds today.  It felt pretty good.  I think I'm going to add 2 more rounds on Friday.

I also finished reading my book.  I was reading Darker Angels by M. L. N. Hanover.  Its the second book in the Black Sun's Daughter series.  I loved it!!!!!!  It really keeps me going.  I find that when there is a lot of action I pedal faster.  When I got done I hurried down to the office and quick hopped on Amazon to see if the next book was out.  It was!  I ordered it.  It won't be here until the end of May, but that's okay because I have the 2nd book in the Blood Lily Chronicles by Julie Kenner to read.  I am alternating between the two series.  Both are great and really keep me going.

Tomorrow it's a running day for me.  I just need to decide if I am going to run in the morning or after my nail appointment.  I'm thinking morning.  We'll just have to see.

Only 10-15 more miles and I've got my goal for the week!

A New Best on the Bike!

Woo hoo for me!!!!!  Today I did 10.41 miles in 40 minutes on the recumbent stationary bike.  It felt so good!  I really didn't know how far I was had gone since I was reading my book.  I just kept going hard and at 25 minutes I realized just how hard I was pushing myself.  I had my heart rate up and I was going hard!

Tomorrow I really think I will go 45 minutes and see if I can go hard for 30 minutes at the higher resistance.  My goal for the week is to get at least 35-40 miles in between riding, walking and running.  I had planned to get the dogs out for at least a 2 mile walk today, but it is just pouring down rain and cold.  There is no way Mulder will go out with me.  He is not a cold weather rainy dog.  Anya would have no problems at all.  She loves playing in the rain.

Right now I'm just relaxing for a bit before I start gearing up to get some more work done.  I have to go to the post office, the bank and this little toy store near us.  I also have practice later on.  Mike and James are going over to his parents for dinner so I don't have to get anything ready for tonight.

I really can't wait for it to get warm and sunny outside so I can get back to taking my morning runs.  I love running early in the morning.  It's so quiet and peaceful.  The air is always fresh and it's a wonderful way to start the day.  Hopefully very very soon!

Rainy Tuesday

I had a rough night last night. I wasn't sleepy so I came downstairs and fell asleep on the couch.  My neck is now stiff and sore.  Plus with the rain moving in I had a raging headache all night.  Today it's supposed to thunderstorm.  I love thunderstorms during the day.

I went to practice and got the kids going.  Then I went and rode 9 miles on the recumbent bike.  It felt good.  I still may take the dogs out for a quick walk between rain storms.

After I worked out I went to Michael's to get supplies for James to make a Mother's Day present for his mom.  He is going to decorate a jewelry box for her.  He loves doing things like that.

I also had to get the materials to make James a t-shirt for his first race.  We started this when I ran my first 5k.  I made us shirts and he loved it.  He asked what his t-shirt was going to look like.  I was trying to figure out a design when it hit me this morning.  On the back I'm going to put World Race Tour and list the 4 races that he's signed up for. I will leave a place for him to put his time if he wants.  On the front I'm going to put some picture that represents each race; a mudpuppy for the Mudpuppy Chase, a lighthouse for the Lake Festival, a pink ribbon for Run for the Cure, and stars with a purple ribbon for Erica's Wish.  I'm going to be busy for the next few days getting these done.  I hope it turns out like I see in my mind.  I also have a Canadian Flag iron on patch and some stars that I will put on the sleeves.  I'm washing the shirt now so I can start on it tonight.

Tomorrow is Wednesday and its my long day.  I want to try to get 10 miles in on the bike.  Hopefully Thursday and Friday I can get a run in.  Only a few more days until my May race!  I'm hoping to do better than my April one.

Team Champs: Day 1 Part 2 & Day 2 Part 1

Yesterday the little guys did awesome!!!!!!  We had 2 10 and under boys score us points in the 100 fly and I'm pretty sure that we had a few 10 and unders get us points in the 100 IM.  One of our 12 year old girls scored in the 50 Free as well.  They were all excited and wound up after their swims.  They are ready for today.  The older kids are now at the pool getting ready to swim their events.

Last night I think there was a herd of elephants in the room above me.  The kids from another team were bouncing around.  Finally at 9:00 pm I called the front desk.  I was tired and I jumped a few times when they crashed on the floor.  I was not happy, but maybe that means they won't swim as well.

This morning I got up and used the fitness room in the hotel.  I did the recumbent bike and felt pretty good.  I only did 7.4 miles, but it still felt good.  I had a good breakfast and now I have some time to relax before I have to leave for the pool at 11:15.  The session is only going to be like 2 hours so it will be quick.  I may try to get another workout in while I'm there, but I'll have to see.  If not, I'll get up tomorrow and workout again before the long day at the pool and the long bus ride home.

It's turning out to be a great weekend for the kids.

Blah...

I feel like such a slug since I haven't had a chance to do anything active this week.  I've been finishing up the newsletter for the swim team.  It's done!

Last night I got no sleep.  I couldn't fall asleep at all and when I did I kept waking up.  It was not fun.  Today has been my long day at the University and I haven't had a chance to get anything to eat.  I'm craving a huge salad.  Yummy!

Tonight I would like to get the dogs out for a walk and I just may have to do it in the dark, but I need to get some form of exercise.

Hopefully tomorrow I can get a run in.

Upcoming Week

It's going to be one crazy week this week.  I have to cover a morning practice tomorrow morning so I'll get on the recumbent stationary bike and try to get 10 miles in.  Then since it's supposed to be nice I'll get the dogs out for a long walk in the afternoon.  Tuesday and Wednesday will pretty much be the same.

I will finish up the newsletter as well.  It has to go out on Wednesday so I'll finish that up tomorrow and add the last minute stuff on Tuesday.  That will take up some time.

Mike leaves for Syracuse and Ottawa tomorrow and will be gone all week.  I want to get a bit of cleaning and laundry done as well.  Wednesday is shot since I'm at the University all day.  Thursday we leave for Sudbury so I have to drop the dogs off at the doggy hotel.

I won't get home until around 3-4 am on Monday morning.  I plan on just staying up until Mike and James leave then I will crash.  I'm taking my running stuff in hopes of getting a run in on Friday and Saturday.  Right now the exercise is really helping me stay sane with all this craziness.

My next race is May 1st.  I have to get at least a 34:00 on this 5K.  Plus Mike and James will be running a 3.5k.  It should be fun!

April Race Down

I ran the ENDURace 5k last night and was not happy with how I did.  It seems like everytime I have pretty good race, the next one is not so good.  I am just getting really frustrated with all this.  I want to break 30 by September and at this rate that won't happen.  I'm so mad at myself over this.

I was telling Mike that I love to run.  I love being outside.  I love pushing myself.  I love the feeling that I get when I'm done with the race.  I now have a schedule that I can do once this week is over and I hope that will help.  I think if I can get out and run 3 days a week and bike or something else 3 days a week that will help so much.

I have a race that I think I'm going to do in May.  I am a virtural runner for a race in DC, but I think I'm running another race here in Kitchener the next week.  Then June gets crazy so no races then.  But July is just packed.  I'm really looking forward to running in July.

Just have to keep going forward.

Here are a few pictures from last night.

Hump Day!

What I thought was going to be an icky day has started becoming a pretty good day.  I got up at 2:45 thinking I was late for practice.  When I realized I could sleep for another hour it was hard for me to fall back asleep.  I had just gotten back into a good sleep when my alarm went off.  I was not a happy person, but I got up.

Luckily I had gotten James' lunch and the casserole for dinner made up last night.  I was moving in slow motion this morning.  I left and got 2 cups of coffee and a protein bar for breakfast.  I needed all the help I could get.

I had to supervise the weight room for 5 of the University swimmers.  It was all I could do to stay awake.  I came down to the office at 6:30 and got some emails answered.  Then I got to have fun!

I went to ride the recumbent bike.  I got my book and started pedaling.  I rode for 40 minutes and went 10.11 miles!   A new record for me!  I didn't even realize how long it had been until it beeped to let me know it was in the cool down mode.  I feel great!!!!!!!

I have one more workout on Friday and my race on Saturday.  Next week I will ride Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday because we have to go to Team Champs on Thursday.  That means a 5 hour bus ride north.  I will see if I can get some sort of workout in on one or two of the days we are up there.  I may be able to on at least one day.

Now I have to ton of stuff to get done here in the office.  Of course some of it has to be done on a program that seems to be not working at the moment, but oh well, I'll make due.

I'm just feel so good right now!!!!!!!!

That felt better

After yesterday I was a bit unmotivated.  I still made myself go up and workout.  I didn't use the treadmill because they just hurt my knees, hips and ankle.  I decided to really push myself on the recumbent bike.  I did 9.11 miles in 35 minutes.  I new personal best.

When I got up there I felt really sluggish, but I just decided that I was going to go and go hard.  I knew that I had gone 8.5 miles before and I really wanted to hit 9 today.  Of course it helped that the book I'm reading hit an exciting fight scene.   I find that I push faster when I come to parts like that.  LOL.

I have a meet this weekend so I'm going to try to get one run outside between now and next Tuesday.  It may or may not happen.  I'm going to take some running clothes with me and I may be able to get out between sessions for a quick run.  I'm really hoping that I can.

April 9th is my next race.  I want to be on or drop a little bit of time since March 12th.  But I have to remember that that course was mostly downhill.  Its hard to compare the two races, but we'll see.

They all can't be good workouts

Today I just wasn't feeling it at all.  I really wanted to workout, but when I started I felt like I was moving through pudding.  It was a slow sluggish start and I just never got the rythm.  I did 20 minutes on the treadmill and it hurt the entire time.  My knee was sore and my muscles were just revolting the whole time.

After the treadmill I went to the bike.  I did 25 minutes there and it was the same thing.  I just felt like I was trying to push bricks that weighed at least 20 pounds.  It just sucked.  I still got in 8 miles total, but it wasn't a good 8 miles.

I was glad to be done and heading home.  I just wasn't feeling it today.  Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

I did get 3 boxes of books ready to be mailed to my friend in Georgia.  I send her books when I'm done reading them.  It's a great system.  Plus I register them all on bookcrossing.com and get to follow them.  I'm such a geek that way.  I love seeing where the books have travelled.  It's kind of cool.  Not everyone will log on and record that they "caught" a "wild" book, but eventually someone might and when that happens I get all excited.  Once agin, I know I'm a geek.  LOL.

Now I'm off to rest a bit.  I am sleeping, but I'm still trying to catch up from when I wasn't.  I think I'll relax and read for a bit.  Like I said, hopefully tomorrow's workout will be better.

The Unexpected

Yesterday I had a plan of running and biking after swim practice.  I was ready to do some work since I was at the University all day.  Well, all that changed.  I had to help with a camp that was going on.  Not a problem.  I thought I could get a short workout in a some point.  Well, I didn't get the exact workout I wanted.

We had a dryland component to this camp.  The woman that ran it did a bootcamp style workout with the kids.  At first they weren't super excited about it but once I said I would do it with them they got more excited.  They seemed to have a good time working hard and moving.  It was a wonderful hour and a half.  The kids did a pretty good job.  I know it had me sweating and working hard.  I may have to look into something like this in the area.  It was fun and it was hard and I loved it!

It's amazing how sometimes the unexpected works out in the end.

Hello Friday!

I am so glad it's Friday!  Although the week went by quickly, it seemed like Friday would never get here.

Last night we went and saw an illusionist.  James absolutely loved it!  He was fascinated by the magic and how people disappeared and reappeared.  When I asked him what his favorite part was, he said, "The floating lady at the very end!"  It was a lot of fun, but a bit of late night for a Thursday.

I had another night of not sleeping.  It's not fair to keep Mike up so I headed down to the couch to read.  I did fall asleep reading, but woke up when I heard the cat knock something over.  Then I read again to fall back asleep and woke up again when Anya needed to go out.  Third time I read and never fell back to sleep.  I got to practice a few minutes before 5:00am since I was up and moving.  I was hoping that getting back on my exercise schedule would help the sleep, but it hasn't so far.

I did get on the recumbent bike for 35 minutes today.  For 30 of those minutes I was peddaling as hard as I could.  The last 5 minutes was a cool down.  Tomorrow I will see if I can do a split run/bike workout like I did Wednesday.  I have 16 days until my next 5K.

I got to start reading a new "workout book" today.  I keep a book in my bag and read it while I'm on the bike.  It makes the time go faster and I find that I go really fast when there are exciting parts.  I just finished Tainted by Julie Kenner.  I love her books and I really like this one.  It's the first book in a triology.  I had to remind myself of that when I wasn't too keen on the ending.  Now I'm reading the second book in the Black Sun's Daughter series by M. L. N. Hanover.  It's called Darker Angels.  I loved the first book Unclean Spirits so I'm hoping this one is just as good.  I like reading these Urban Fantasy books while I workout.  They are full ofi fights with demons and like I said earlier, it makes me peddal faster.

Now I have to buckle down and get some work done.  I really just want to take a nap, but that's not in the cards today or tomorrow for that matter.  Oh well...sleep is overrated anyway.  Right?????

Busy morning and finally back on schedule

I had to get up and go to practice this morning after only sleeping about 3 1/2 hours.  I have not been able to sleep at all lately.  I am working on it though.

Practice went well.  Kids did pretty good this morning.  I then went and rode the recumbent bike for 35 minutes and went 8 miles.  I would have gone 10 minutes longer but Mike had emailed me that one of the animals had gotten sick.  I then started to think about who it could have been and what did they get into.  I remembered that I had had a piece of chocolate the other night.  I tried to remember if I left the bag where they could get it or not.  I couldn't remember so guilt and fear brought me home.

They hadn't gotten into the chocolate so all was good.  I felt better seeing that.

James had asked to bring in a treat since he's Star of the Day tomorrow.  Star of the Day is kind of like Show and Tell when we were growing up.  He gets to bring in something special to him and share it with the class.  He also let us know that he can bring in a treat to share.  He looked through his cookbooks and picked out a recipe for As You Wish Muffins.  They are a healthy breakfast muffin made with whole wheat flour, very very very little sugar and some of my homemade jam.  I am making 36 muffins today.  I will put them in little bags that I picked up and add a pencil and a stencil that I found in the dollar section.

When I'm done with that I have to get dinner ready so all Mike has to do is pop it in the oven when he gets home.  We have found that doing that or using the crockpot works best.  James is usually hungry so all he has to do is wait about half an hour for dinner.  Mike doesn't have to cook and they can eat and it will still be warm when I get home from practice.  Tonight I'm making Rustic Chicken and Mushroom Stew.

I feel like I'm finally back on my schedule.  I have the meals planned out for the rest of the month.  The grocery lists for each week done and ready to be added too.  I am on schedule to work out tomorrow and Friday and possibly even Saturday.  I'm getting the house cleaned slowly.  Very very slowly, but it is getting done.  I have my workouts written for the week and am working on the newsletter tomorrow.  I feel like I'm back in the groove.  Finally.  Now I just have to maintain that groove and get my sleep back on schedule and life will be good.

Introducing the Running Manatee

I'm Amanda and I am rediscovering my love of running and all things active.  I was a three sport athelete in high school and ran track in college.  I taught special education for 12 years and am currently in my 13th year of coaching swimming.  It is now my full time job.  Manatees are my favorite animal of all times!

In July I lost my grandfather to cancer and while trying to find a way to deal with it I started running again.  It was just what I needed.  Having the running background I knew that I had to start with interval training to get back up to speed.  I found a wonderful program called Running Mate 5k. (http://runningmatemedia.com/) that helped me get back into 5k shape.  I ran my first 5k in a really long time in October.  It felt amazing!!!!!!  I ran two more 5ks in October and then another one in January.  My goal is to run at least one race per month.  I have a 3k coming up in February and I'm excited for that.

I have to be cautious with what I do as I had to have ankle reconstruction about 11 years ago.  5K is about the max I can do.  Since moving to Canada over a year ago I've had to learn to run on a treadmill.  I'm not a fan of that at all!  So I decided to split my running with the use of recumbent stationary bike.  That has been a life-saver to me.  It breaks my workout up and with all the New Year's resolution people right now taking the treadmills I am still able to get my cardio in.

I have also taken up belly dancing and will be starting yoga in another week or two.  When I can't get to the gym I will just use the Wii Fit to get some quick exercise into my day.

While I do have a weight loss goal, it is not my primary reason for exercising.  I found that I feel better and am better able to handle stress.  My husband, Mike, is super supportive and my biggest fan.  He is always at the finish line to take my picture and to give me a big hug.  My step-son James has made the comment that he wants to run a race with me sometime soon. I'm looking for one that falls on the weeks we have him.  He loves that we can make shirts and wear them for the races.

I just want to share my journey with others and hopefully get a few other people out there to join me in getting healthy and setting postive examples for the kids in our lives.
